Carly Amon – Conflict Transformation Education

The Why

Project purpose or objectives.

My objective was to create something to help teach the upcoming generation how to respond to conflict that would be adaptable to different groups.

The Project
Challenges encountered

The nature of the project was centered around adapting to needs, so I initially wanted to discover how the nearby school district was implementing Conflict Transformation. After my own research, it was difficult to get in contact with the right people, until I went to the school district office in person. When I did however, I was able to speak with the project director of Madison Cares, Rick Croft.

Project processes

I started how by researching how other communities involved principles of Conflict Resolution. After some research and coordination with individuals from the schools, I gathered my knowledge on the topic and organized it into important subtopics. I then utilized various teaching methods to apply the principles in an engaging way. I also collaborated with a professor who teaches Peace and Conflict Transformation to find opportunities for improvement.

An overview of experiences
  • Applied research
  • Meeting with school officials
  • Analyzing how to adapt to common needs
  • Organizing and Prioritizing principles into a lesson plan
  • Creating various methods of engagement
  • Collaborating with a professor
Insights and Takeaways

Change starts with you. We are able to use our expertise to help the community. Sometimes it takes some trial and error to find the right avenues, but having the initiative starts the ball rolling.

Secondly, communities and school districts are different. The way that the elementary school that I went to runs is not the same way that the elementary schools here run. There are different needs, available resources, and opportunities. Finding these out and being considerate is crucial in order to help any community.
