Hi! I’m Gabriela Fletcher, a BYU-Idaho student studying communication with an emphasis in news/journalism. For my senior project I created Passion & Profit Magazine, a publication highlighting small business owners.
Project Overview
I chose to focus my magazine on small businesses and following your passion because I feel strongly that people should love what they do for a living. There is an equal amount of risk and heart that goes into a business and I wanted to shine a light on the unique individuals behind them.
I found five small businesses and entrepreneurs to include in this publication: Wanderful Workshop, Elise Handmade, Bee Box Honey, Heels with Kennadee and indie author Kaylin Hughes.
Articles
Each article in the magazine is written as a feature with small variations in the type of feature — Wanderful Workshop was written as a news feature, Elise Handmade and Bee Box Honey are written in a more human interest style and the Heels with Kennadee and Kaylin Hughes articles are more profile-style features.
Photos
I photographed and edited all the images used in the magazine. I gave each feature a different color story and aimed for the photos to add to the context and story, not just compliment it visually. For example, all the photos used for Bee Box Honey are warm and natural looking while the photos used for Kennadee Burt’s feature have colored lights and stick to a blue/red/pink color scheme. For Bee Box Honey, I used photos of the owner in action and photos of the setting, while with Kennadee, I used photos of her posing and dancing in the studio.

Layout & Design
I created the cover, editor’s letter, table of contents and layout for each article spread in Adobe InDesign. I chose a set of 3 complimentary fonts to use throughout the magazine for consistency and to establish a clear brand. I added typical elements found in popular magazines such as “teasers” for the articles on the cover, a footer with page numbers and the magazine name/issue and sub-headers throughout the articles.
After creating the magazine in InDesign, I transferred the content to HeyZine to make the magazine an interactive flipbook that is available online. This meant I could add more media elements such as links to the business websites. To enhance the digital reading experience, on the final page that has the excerpt from Kaylin Hughes book, I included an audio file of Kaylin reading the excerpt.
The digital flipbook is available below or on the HeyZine website.
