Videos for Sherilyn Colby Consulting

Hannah Leavitt – Video Production

Introduction

I edited videos for the small business Sherilyn Colby Consulting. Among other things, Sherilyn Colby Consulting helps individuals and businesses with marketing and SEO. I specifically edited videos for two of Sherilyn’s clients: Payton Holt, who is a marriage counselor and Robin Young, who puts on Zoom Webinars for her project See Her Clearly.

Goals

My Goals

  • Get experience working with a client. As wonderful as school projects are, they don’t always perfectly replicate how things will be in the workplace. I wanted to get a feel for working and interacting with a client.
  • See if freelance video editing is something I want to continue doing. There can be a lot of uncertainty when facing the prospect of entering the workforce. Considering freelancing can add another layer of uncertainty. So I wanted to try it out while the stakes were still relatively low.
  • Get more experience with video editing. Most of the video projects I worked on as a student involved group work where we each had various roles. For those projects, I rarely worked as an editor. I wanted to build my editing portfolio and skills.
  • See how well I could video edit with the resources I would have after graduating. Being a student at BYU-Idaho has come with many perks, including having access to video editing software, camera equipment, and much more. However, I won’t have access to these resources after graduating. So I chose to do something with my own equipment and resources.
  • Do something different from the typical video production student. I have seen some amazing video production senior projects. But I’ve noticed that they often involve making similar kinds of videos that we do in our classes: One big video with a team helping along the way. I don’t have anything against those people or videos, but I wanted to expand the kinds of videos that I can create and the kinds of environments that I work in.

My Client’s Goals

  • Create a video for Sherilyn Colby Consulting every week to promote various programs that she offers, create more traffic within her business, and create more consistency in her posts.
  • Provide Sherilyn’s clients with videos for their websites/social media. This was a secondary goal for Sherilyn, but she did have two clients that needed video help.

Results

I was able to achieve or at least make progress toward each of my project goals. I gained experience working with a client; I have a better idea of what freelancing could be like; I got more experience with video editing; I got a feel for what it’s like to edit using the free version of DaVinci Resolve, free stock footage, and my personal computer; and I did something different from what I’ve seen other video production students do in the past.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to help Sherilyn create weekly videos for her business. We planned and discussed some future videos to create, but we weren’t able to see those projects through to production or post production. Below, you can see how far we got in the pre-production of those projects.

Results for Sherilyn’s Clients

Payton Holt – The Marriage & Family Clinic

I ended up editing nine videos for Payton Holt. The videos answer questions people may have about marriage counseling, and Payton’s approach to marriage counseling. These videos will be posted on his social media page. Sherilyn filmed these videos on her iPhone and I edited them on DaVinci Resolve. She posted the first video before I made more edits to it, so I focused on making the last eight videos better. She also originally recorded 10 videos for Payton, but the second video ended up not being usable.

I didn’t have any interaction with Payton himself so everything I did was based on information from Sherilyn. She asked me to make the videos louder, but she left the rest up to me. I decided to see what I could do for the audio, make some simple edits to the videos themselves, adjust the framing, and add in stock footage and music.

Robin Young – See Her Clearly

Robin’s videos were very simple. She records a Zoom webinar every week and needed the recordings to be clipped. This allowed her to post more professional videos on her website that didn’t include any stumbles that she made when it came to sharing her screen and the like. Additionally, she would sometimes have a question and answer section at the end of the webinar. Because of this, I made a few different versions of those webinars: One that had the full thing, one with just the main lecture, and one with just the discussion portion. All in all, I edited nine Zoom webinars for Robin.

Project Time Tracking

What’s Next?

Moving forward, I plan to continue working with Sherilyn Colby Consulting. We will work together to complete the videos that we planned and discussed the last few months. I have learned a lot from this project and am excited to use this as a launching point to the rest of my career!
