Introduction:
For my Senior project, I was able to create an interview guide exploring the experiences of 5 South American students navigating cultural adjustments while pursuing an education at BYU-Idaho. Through in-depth interviews, this research aims to understand the challenges, successes, and adaption strategies of these students, providing valuable insights into the international student experience. This project addresses the need to understand the unique challenges faced by South American students at BYU-Idaho. By giving voice to their experiences, this research contributes to a greater awareness of cultural adjustment issues and can inform support efforts for international students.
Strategy:
I was able to utilize qualitative research methods, specifically conversational interviews. The interview guide focuses on:
- Cultural adjustment challenges
- Adaptation to the academic environment
- Social involvement
- Coping strategies and support
- Reflections and advice
Key Findings/Results:
- Cultural Differences: Students encountered challenges related to communication styles, social norms, and adapting to a new cultural environment.
- Language Barries: Language proficiency, particularly in academic settings, presented ongoing challenges for some students.
- Academic Adaptation: Adjusting to the academic rigor and expectations of a U.S. university required resilience and the use of available resources.
- Social Involvement: Building social connections and navigating social interactions with students from different backgrounds was a key aspect of the adjustment process.
- Support Systems: Access to and utilization of campus resources, as well as support from the international student community, played a crucial role in students’ success.
- Personal Growth: Despite challenges, students demonstrated significant personal growth, adaptability, and resilience throughout their journeys.
Informed Consent and Media Release for Participation in Interview and Photography:
I was able to create an Informed Consent and Media Release form for the interviewees to sign before participating in the interview.
Interview Set of Questions:
