Wish You Were Here: Creative Snapshots of Rexburg’s Nearby Escapes

Project Purpose and Objectives

The purpose of this project was to design a collection of unique travel postcards that combine the nostalgic feel of vintage design with modern visual storytelling and trends. The goal was to create polished, memorable pieces that could serve both decorative and functional purposes in print or digital spaces.

Key objectives included:

  • Studying the layout, typography, and color schemes used in vintage postcards
  • Experimenting with photo editing and type placement to develop a cohesive visual theme
  • Producing clean, print-ready designs that align with contemporary design standards

The Project

The project began with extensive visual research, including the study of antique postcards and modern travel branding. Inspiration was drawn from both physical vintage cards and curated design boards.

Work samples include:

  • Pencil sketch layouts to experiment with text hierarchy and composition
  • Digital mockups built in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, using custom color palettes and curated photography
  • Final postcard designs incorporating scanned textures, handmade elements like lace, and thoughtful typography to reflect the personality of each location
Challenges Encountered

One of the main challenges was managing large Adobe project files, which became too big to upload easily or share quickly. This required adjustments in how I organized and compressed project assets.

Another challenge involved maintaining visual balance. It took time and iteration to ensure the typography supported the imagery without overpowering it. I also had to troubleshoot sizing and resolution issues to prepare the designs for print, which required additional file formatting skills.

Project Processes

The process unfolded in several stages:

  1. Research and Inspiration
I studied both vintage and modern postcards, identifying traits such as scale, text placement, and use of negative space. I also visited local thrift stores and analyzed antique design choices.
  2. Planning and Sketching
I began with hand-drawn layouts to test potential concepts. These sketches helped determine how to balance type with imagery effectively.
  3. Image Editing and Typography
I selected fonts through Adobe Fonts and experimented with color and spacing to align each design with its theme. I also refined my own photos and incorporated handmade elements like fabric overlays.
  4. Digital Production
After finalizing the visual concept, I moved into digital creation, layering and adjusting elements within Adobe to meet both creative and technical requirements.
  5. Mockup and Review
I assembled mockups for review, adjusting leading, spacing, and alignment to polish the final layouts.

Experience Overview

This project gave me hands-on experience in translating a creative idea into a refined, professional product. I practiced managing a project from initial concept through production, applying both artistic judgment and technical skills. I also improved my ability to evaluate my own work critically and make thoughtful revisions.

Insights and Takeaways

Several key lessons came from this experience:

  • Good design depends on the relationship between form and function. The most visually appealing layouts still need to work in practical, usable ways.
  • Typography plays a crucial role in mood and tone. Small shifts in font choice or spacing can completely transform the personality of a design.
  • Iteration is essential. Even strong initial ideas benefit from refining and reworking, especially when balancing text and imagery.

This project was an opportunity to grow both creatively and professionally. It challenged me to explore new techniques, adapt to technical limitations, and ultimately deliver a product that reflects both thoughtful design and strong storytelling.
