This project focuses on developing my skills in video editing and filming. Throughout the semester, I will practice shooting, editing, and storytelling to improve my overall video production abilities.
Project Purpose and Objectives
This project focuses on developing my skills in video editing and filming. Through continuous practice in shooting, editing, and storytelling, I aim to enhance my overall video production abilities and create engaging digital content.
The project explores how visual design and storytelling can function as effective communication tools, allowing messages, emotions, and information to be conveyed clearly to an audience.
Key objectives include:
- Communicate messages effectively through short-form videos and visual content
- Develop skills in video editing, filming techniques, and narrative storytelling
- Apply audience-centered communication strategies to enhance engagement
- Reflect on communication growth and effectiveness through audience interaction and professional feedback
The Project
The project produced five distinct short videos, each designed to develop specific skills in filming and editing:
- Daily Life Fixed-Camera Video – A daily life vlog using a fixed camera to practice composition and framing.
- Food Preparation Video with Voiceover – A cooking video that incorporates narration, teaching how to combine storytelling with visual content.
- Camera-Based Exploration of Daily Life – A video capturing the beauty in everyday life, emphasizing light, shadow, and visual composition.
- EmoBank App Demo Video – A demonstration video introducing the concept of the EmoBank app, combining clear explanation with visual presentation.
- Experimental Editing Video – A short video created using various editing techniques to explore pacing, rhythm, and creative storytelling.
In addition to video production, I created three visual design pieces to further explore graphic storytelling and visual communication principles. Each video allowed me to experiment with different shooting techniques, editing styles, and storytelling approaches. They were published on social media platforms, including Instagram and YouTube, to gain real-world audience feedback.
Challenges Encountered
Starting with limited experience in both filming and video editing, mastering the necessary software and techniques required experimentation and repeated practice.
Balancing personal creative preferences with audience comprehension was another challenge. Some content initially aligned with my own style but required adjustment to better engage viewers and clearly communicate the intended message.
Maintaining consistent quality across multiple videos while incorporating feedback from both the audience and my professional mentor was an ongoing challenge throughout the project.
Project Process
I used Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and Procreate for video and visual design. Videos were published on Instagram and YouTube to capture audience response and feedback.
Each project followed a structured workflow:
- Planning – outlining concepts, storyboards, and visual design goals
- Filming – practicing shooting techniques, including camera angles, composition, lighting, and framing to capture high-quality footage
- Editing – applying principles of visual hierarchy, narrative pacing, and message framing
- Publishing and Engagement Analysis – reviewing audience metrics and comments to assess communication effectiveness
- Reflection and Iteration – incorporating mentor feedback and personal observations to improve future content
Professional mentorship provided guidance on editing techniques, storytelling, and project direction, ensuring that the work aligned with best practices in visual communication and digital media production.
Experience Overview
This project offered hands-on experience in creating, publishing, and analyzing multimedia content. Initially, learning new software and developing shooting and editing skills required significant effort. Through repeated practice and experimentation, I gained confidence in producing visually engaging and well-structured short-form videos.
Observing audience engagement allowed me to understand how viewers interpret digital content and influenced my design and storytelling choices. Regular mentor consultations provided constructive insights that refined my workflow and improved the quality of each project deliverable.
Insights and Takeaways
A key insight from this project is that effective communication relies on both intentional visual design and clear storytelling.
While engagement metrics such as views, likes, and comments offered useful feedback, combining these insights with self-reflection and mentor guidance provided a more comprehensive evaluation of communication effectiveness.
By the end of the project, I enhanced my ability to produce content that conveys messages clearly, engages viewers, and applies professional visual storytelling techniques. This experience strengthened both my creative and analytical skills, demonstrating the practical impact of digital media as a communication tool.
