Objective
This workshop focuses on improving communication with individuals who have nonverbal and cognitive communication disorders across both healthcare and business settings. Effective communication is essential in any professional environment, as it directly impacts safety, productivity, relationship-building, and overall outcomes. In healthcare, communication influences patient care and safety, while in business settings, it affects teamwork, customer service, and organizational success. However, individuals with communication disorders often face barriers that limit their ability to fully participate in these environments.
The purpose of this communication workshop is to equip professionals with the knowledge, skills, and practical tools needed to effectively interact with individuals who experience communication challenges. These may include difficulties with speech, language comprehension, social interaction, or cognitive processing. By increasing awareness of common communication barriers and introducing inclusive, patient- and client-centered strategies, this training aims to reduce misunderstandings, improve engagement, and create more effective and respectful interactions. A key focus of the workshop is reinforcing that communication differences do not indicate a lack of understanding, but rather require adaptive approaches from professionals.
This project integrates research on communication disorders with foundational principles from interpersonal communication, providing practical strategies that can be applied across various professional contexts. These strategies include active listening, simplifying language, recognizing and responding to nonverbal cues, using visual supports, and allowing additional processing time. By applying these techniques, professionals can better support individuals in expressing their needs, participating in interactions, and achieving successful outcomes.
Ultimately, this workshop promotes a shift in perspective from viewing communication as a routine task to recognizing it as a critical professional skill. Whether in a hospital, office, or customer-facing environment, effective and inclusive communication fosters trust, enhances performance, and supports a culture of respect and accessibility. By implementing these practices, organizations can create environments where all individuals are empowered to communicate, contribute, and succeed.

Challenges
The development of this communication workshop presented several challenges, particularly in balancing the needs of both healthcare and business settings. While both environments rely heavily on effective communication, the context, expectations, and types of interactions differ significantly. Healthcare communication often involves high-stakes, time-sensitive situations where patient safety is a priority, whereas business communication may focus more on collaboration, customer service, and productivity. Creating content that was relevant, practical, and adaptable across both settings required careful consideration and refinement.
Another challenge involved synthesizing research on communication disorders with principles from interpersonal communication. Much of the available research is specialized and focused on clinical or educational contexts, making it necessary to translate these findings into practical strategies that professionals in various fields can easily understand and apply. Ensuring that the information remained accurate while also being accessible and actionable for a broad audience required simplifying complex concepts without losing their meaning or importance
Another key challenge was designing the workshop to be both informative and engaging. Communication training can sometimes feel abstract, so it was important to incorporate practical examples, real-world applications, and interactive elements that would resonate with participants. Ensuring that the workshop encouraged reflection and behavior change, rather than simply delivering information, required intentional planning and structure.
Finally, maintaining a respectful and strengths-based perspective throughout the project was essential. It was important to avoid framing individuals with communication disorders in a deficit-focused way, and instead emphasize their abilities and the role of the environment in supporting effective communication. This required thoughtful language choices and a consistent focus on inclusion, dignity, and empowerment.
Process
Blog Updates on the Project Process
The development of this project began with identifying a relevant and impactful topic that addressed a clear need in both healthcare and business environments. Communication with individuals who have nonverbal and cognitive disabilities was selected due to its strong connection to safety, inclusion, and overall effectiveness in professional settings. Initial research focused on understanding different types of communication disorders, common barriers individuals face, and the real-world consequences of ineffective communication. This phase included reviewing academic literature, organizational guidelines, and professional resources to build a strong foundation of knowledge.
Following the research phase, the next step involved organizing the information into a structured format suitable for both a written handbook and a professional workshop. Key themes were identified, including communication barriers, patient- and client-centered strategies, and practical tools such as visual supports and assistive communication methods. Concepts from interpersonal communication—such as active listening, clarity, and empathy—were integrated to ensure the content was not only research-based but also applicable in everyday interactions. Care was taken to present the material in a way that was clear, concise, and adaptable across different professional contexts.
The final phase of the project focused on refining the content and translating it into engaging, user-friendly materials. This included developing slide outlines, visual aids, and supporting elements such as charts and summaries to enhance understanding. Attention was given to ensuring the information was both practical and actionable, allowing participants to apply strategies immediately in their work environments. Throughout the process, the project was continuously revised to improve clarity, relevance, and professionalism, resulting in a comprehensive workshop designed to promote effective and inclusive communication.
Insights
Throughout the development of this project, one of the most significant insights gained was the realization of how common communication disorders are across both healthcare and business settings, and how frequently they go unrecognized. Many individuals experience communication challenges that are not immediately visible, which can lead to misunderstandings, frustration, and reduced participation. This highlighted the importance of not making assumptions about a person’s level of understanding based on how they communicate, and instead approaching each interaction with patience and openness.
Another key insight was the impact that small communication adjustments can have on overall effectiveness. Strategies such as slowing down, using simple language, allowing additional processing time, and incorporating visual supports may seem minor, but they can dramatically improve understanding and engagement. This reinforced the idea that effective communication is not about changing the individual, but about adapting the environment and communication style to better meet diverse needs. These principles, often emphasized in interpersonal communication studies, proved to be highly applicable in real-world professional settings.
Finally, this project emphasized the importance of intentional and inclusive communication as a professional skill. Communication is often viewed as a routine or automatic process, but this experience demonstrated that it requires awareness, practice, and continuous improvement. Developing this workshop also reinforced the value of empathy, active listening, and flexibility in building meaningful interactions. Overall, the project provided a deeper understanding of how inclusive communication practices can improve outcomes, strengthen relationships, and create more supportive and effective environments for all individuals.
