Whilst out exploring, old friends Matt & Kai stumble upon an empty Kayak floating downstream. Various items are found inside, however, the most intriguing is a phone that’s been recording for the past 30 minutes.
TRAILER
The goal of this project was to make a film that showcases both my technical growth and artistic sensibilities as a storyteller. As a filmmaker, I set out to create a project that demonstrates my understanding of visual storytelling, cinematography, and direction.
This film allowed me the opportunity to put my past experiences to the test. Scriptwriting and shot composition worked hand-in-hand while creating this work, as well as collaboration with actors and managing a production. I aimed to challenge myself by taking ownership of every stage in the filmmaking process, making choices that supported the story while also pivoting when something wouldn’t come together on set.
In addition to highlighting my technical growth, this project was driven by a desire to tell a story I’d been exploring for several months. Born from my past experiences filming with friends, I committed to this project with a clear understanding of what it would require and the resources I could bring together to make it happen.
Through this film, I experienced numerous highs and lows, but it became a process I grew to enjoy more and more over time. As both a capstone for my education and a stepping stone into my future career, this project provided lessons I will continue to carry with me moving forward.
PRE – PRODUCTION
WRITING
Writing continues to be my favorite part of the process, with the freedom to create a narrative as well as completely discard whole ideas along the way. Reshaping a story into a better version than it was the day before.
I came up with the key concept for “Number Two” in late 2024, building upon it for several months. Once the overall structure was set, I sat down to develop the script, writing scenes while simultaneously planning the shots throughout the process.
STORYBOARDS
Storyboarding is one of my favorite processes, as I usually create two different versions. A rough hand drawn board, and a highly detailed board using stills and figures I place into them.
The storyboarding process is one of the key steps that helps me determine if a shot will or won’t work for a scene.
LOCATION SCOUTING
A somewhat secluded area off the snake river is where I found my key location. The whole project was dependent on it, so I made sure to scout it out whilst also writing the film.
PRE – VIS
Although it was tedious in moments, taking the time to plan out sequences greatly improved the efficiency of filming. Key moments and shots in the film were changed after creating an animatic, as they didn’t flow as well as initially envisioned.

Number Two brought so many challenges, with some moments making me want to trash the whole project. But sticking through to the end proved to be more rewarding than anything else I’ve experienced in the past.
I learned to rely on my actors, recognize when my weaknesses can be strengthened by others talents, and take pride in the process that has brought me to where I am now.
SENIOR SHOWCASE
Showcasing my project was an amazing day. Seeing the reaction my project pulled out of others and the excitement it evoked was something I will continue to remember.
Although my booth was simple, I was proud of how it represented both me and the work I put into the project. A collection of kit lenses, a clapboard, cinematography textbooks, and a Kindle showcasing different stages of the production helped convey my process effectively. Filmmaking is, in many ways, both messy and cohesive at the same time.
I plan to release the film “Number Two” in late 2026 after tweaking it extensively.
ABOUT ME
I’ve always had a passion for Video Production/Film, and my time at Brigham Young University Idaho has only solidified it. Since beginning here, I have been dedicated to developing my skills in storytelling, cinematography, and editing. Refining my craft through hands on experience, as well as growing technically and artistically. My long term goal is to land a film job within the industry, while continuing to pick up new skills. When I’m not out filming or editing I’m inside hanging out with my wife and dog, or planning a future project.
