Project Purpose
As graduation has become within reach, I decided to push myself in completing a personal project to add to my portfolio. As my dream job would be a human resource manager, I focused my project on principles of human resources. I decided to create a website to refer to for certain human resource concepts that needed to be addressed to help my understanding grow as well as a tool to help other professionals. OSHA was a highlighted concern for me as this government agency seemed to be rigid and unforgiving. My focus for this website is on OSHA procedures, and then some other vital information to have such as hiring and firing.
Challenges
This project tested my limits. I struggle with technology and working with different programs to elicit desired outcomes. However I wanted to add to my repertoire of skills and push myself in a way that I had not done before. With this lofty goal in mind, I decided to create this website on WordPress. This was particularly difficult as my mentor did not have background in website building, but was a human resources manager. This meant that I had to watch many YouTube videos on creating a WordPress website and teach myself these incredible skills. I had to learn not only what I needed but also what they were. I had to learn that I had to buy a Web Hosting and Web Domain for my website to run on the internet. I needed to learn how to format, create, and edit my website from Editor as well as how to create pages and posts. These various tasks were exhausting and seemed outside my realm of capabilities. However, through the encouragement of my mentor as well as my loved ones, I was able to acquire these illustrious skills.
Project Process
I began by creating my website, setting up the domain and hosting. Then I did my research on OSHA protocols, hiring and firing regulations. After that, I needed to set up my website which constituted me watching videos, messing with my website, and finally formatting it. Following that phase, I then began to implement my findings and categorized them into pages and posts. I then would go back and forth between formatting my website and adding more content. I would go back and forth with my mentor on how and what to improve upon, which included changing my entire format of my website. I decided to use images from online but adhered to copyright laws, only using free-use images and attributing to their creator.
Insights and Takeaways
Through this project, I learned that challenging myself, although is painful, is an extremely rewarding endeavor. I took on challenges that I never saw myself being able to accomplish which boosted my self-esteem. My mentor was extremely helpful in understanding certain procedures, knowing what to focus on, and directing me to great material. With a final review with my mentor, I asked him what I could improve upon in the future. I learned that I needed to itemize and define what I wanted to learn and gain from my mentor. Having clearer goals allows for better understanding as well as accomplishing more objectives. I also learned that I needed to be better about updating my mentor. I was too timid as I was afraid to be a bother to my mentor, which lead me to limiting my communication too much with him. Although these were great learning curves for me, my mentor also noted that I was extremely respectful of him, his time, and of his opinions. This process was an incredible journey for me, and I am excited to push myself further in upcoming projects.
