Hello! My name is Jadree Farmer and I love to tell stories through writing.
Project Overview
For this project, I interviewed and photographed a handful of Brigham Young University-Idaho students—women who shared about their conversion to Jesus Christ, their journey to BYU-Idaho, their achievements, and their aspirations once they graduate. I then used Adobe InDesign to create a faith-based magazine compiling these feature profiles. I created all photos, writing, and designs in this magazine.

The Process
To get this project started, I reached out on a local Facebook group and asked for BYU-Idaho students with unique stories about their conversion and journey to achieving their educational goals. I was pleased to receive a warm response from many students who offered their time.
Once I’d selected my interviewees, I spent time interviewing/photographing each of them, then scheduled additional photoshoots in locations that were meaningful to their educational and spiritual journey here at BYU-Idaho.
The writing, editing, and design portion of my magazine followed, which took the bulk of time toward the creation of my final product.
Skills Used
I practiced older skills and developed newer skills through this project process. Here are a few:
- Interviewing: Each interview ranged from 1-3 hours in length. I prepared a set of questions prior to each interview and also practiced asking questions on-the-spot as I came to learn more about the individual’s story.
- Photography: I applied photography skills such as using the rule of thirds, framing, and camera settings to adjust the lighting appropriately.
- Writing: Majority of time for this project was spent reading over my interview transcripts, outlining, then writing each story.
- Photo Editing: Photos were edited using Adobe Lightroom.
- Editing: I read through each article many times with fresh eyes to correct things like content, grammar, and punctuation.
- Other Visual Communication: I used Adobe InDesign to create a magazine design that would match the theme and tone of my articles. I adjusted layout, typography, etc. as needed to meet these goals.
