The Inspiration Behind My Senior Project
At BYU-Idaho, the mission is to develop leaders who can make a positive impact in their homes, communities, and beyond. As an international student, I arrived at BYU-I unaware of my potential. It was only when I got a job at the Student Records and Registration on campus that I found the potential I had to be a good leader.
However, throughout the years I noticed there was no concrete training or guidance on how to become an effective lead. It was through my Communications major that I learned valuable and relevant skills. When specialists become leads, they get a new role but are not guided on what this new role implies.
BYU-I’s mission statement and my own experience led me to develop this project. I embarked on creating a comprehensive Leads Training Guide for the Registration Unit. The goal was to equip leads with the necessary skills, knowledge, and mindset to excel in their roles and create a culture of leadership, inquiry, and excellence.
From Concept to Execution: The Process of Developing the Leads Training Guide
The project began with an audit of the current leadership expectations and resources through interviews with leads, employees, and supervisors. I created an anonymous survey for both specialists and leads to evaluate the skills leadership skills and the perceived effectiveness of their roles.

This provided me with a clear understanding of the existing needs. Following this, I researched leadership principles and organizational standards to develop content for the guide. I gathered all the information I collected and began a draft for an outline. There were multiple versions of it since I tried to combine areas and made sure there was a relevant order to each item and section.

Throughout the project creation, I met regularly with my faculty mentor, Eric Embree, and the Registration Coordinator to ensure the guide was practical and aligned with the unit’s standards.
The Final Deliverables and Impact
Throughout more than 50 hours of work on this project, I was able to create the final deliverable, a Leads Training Guide that covered essential topics such as professional development principles, daily responsibilities, communication structures, and initiatives for continuous improvement. The guide also included tools and templates for initiatives and tasks that leads perform regularly.
Additionally, I delivered this guide in an in-person training on June 20th, 2024, during forum hour, to leads, future leads, and the Registration Coordinator. The results of the in-person training helped to understand if the needs of the Registration Unit had been met.

By creating this guide, I aimed to not only enhance the leadership skills of current leads but also to contribute to the long-term success and culture of the Registration Unit.
