Inspiration
After the COVID 19 pandemic hit, my family made the decision to homeschool. That experience changed the way I view education and I developed a passion for the opportunities associated with homeschool. During the years I was homeschooled, I was introduced to Latter UP. When it came time to start my capstone project, I reached out to the director and founder of Latter UP about how I could showcase their program with my skills.
Project Overview
After meeting with the director, we settled on three needs that I could help meet.
1. A new promotional video.
The goal of the promotional video is to to get prospective families interested in their program. The original video was a screen recording of the director narrating over a series of slides. I created a recorded presentation highlighting the programs and opportunities that Latter UP provides.
2. Clear Communication.
Along with the promotional video, they wanted to outline clear expectations for incoming families. Latter UP is a contributing co-op, meaning that each family is required to make a contribution, whether through leading, teaching, or planning activities. This needed to be clear and direct, while also remining friendly and inviting.
3. Social media content.
They wanted the 10 minute promotional video to be able to be turned into social media reels. In addition to the social media content, I created a guide to help them utilize the content on social media to expand their audience.
Challenges
I ran into several challenges throughout my project. My initial project proposal underwent significant changes to better align with the needs of Latter UP. The biggest challenge that I faced was communication. There was a lack of clearly defined expectations regarding their vision towards the beginning of the project. As a result, it took several weeks to align and ensure we were all on the same page. Once I understood the vision, I was able to meet their needs.
Project Summary
Despite the challenges I learned so much and had opportunities to practice the skills I’ve developed over the last four years at Brigham Young University- Idaho. One of the most impactful things I’ve learned from this project, is how to ask better questions to clarify expectations. I’m grateful for this opportunity and for those who helped me along the way.
