Project Purpose & Objectives
This project’s purpose was to spearhead the organization of a QPR Suicide Prevention Training and create infographics and resource cards that can be utilized by The Center for HOPE, which hosted the training. The main objectives were to create flyers and informational graphics to promote the event and then assist in the event planning aspect of the training.
The Project
The first document was used to promote the QPR training. I printed and distributed the flyers to relevant organizations in Madison, Jefferson, and Fremont Counties, such as nonprofit institutions, school district offices, police stations, libraries, courthouses, and fire departments. The second image is a created example that helped educate individuals about suicide and the stigmas around it. That image was posted on social media. The last image is a resource card that I created and was handed out to individuals at the QPR training. The remaining cards and graphics were shared with the Center for HOPE, so they can print and utilize the cards for future events.
Challenges
A main challenge that became prevalent was identifying appropriate colors, text, and overall design that would make the infographics and resource cards seem educational and hopeful, considering the sensitive subject.
Process
The project started by meeting and coordinating with Andra Smith-Hansen, who would be giving the QPR training, so we could establish deadlines and expectations for deliverables. I then researched local organizations that would be ideal groups to promote the event. I then began creating infographics with topics based on the trainer’s advice. Once created and approved, they were posted online, printed, and distributed a few days before the event. Once the event arrived, I assisted in preparing the venue and then distributed resource cards to attendees after the training was over.
Overview
This project provided experience in design, community relations, and event planning. It also provided a unique opportunity to give back to the community while helping promote and educate about a local and national crisis.
Insights
Combining clean, empathetic communication with strategized designs and logistics helps ensure that sensitive topics like suicide are not only handled with care, but also reach and resonate with those who need these resources.
