Training Manual for HR Hiring Team: BYU–Pathway Worldwide

Project Purpose

The purpose of this project was to create a clear and simple training manual for new hires working on the hiring team at BYU–Pathway Worldwide. This role focuses on reviewing and screening candidates who apply to become online instructors, so it is important that new team members understand the process well from the beginning.

The main objective was to build a guide that explains step by step how the hiring process works, what systems are used, and what responsibilities are expected. I wanted to create something that reduces confusion, saves time during training, and helps new hires feel more confident in their role.

The Project

The final product is a digital training manual that includes key information needed for someone starting in this role.

Some of the main sections include:

  • Overview of BYU–Pathway Worldwide and its purpose
  • Explanation of important roles like Content Exper
  • Description of the main systems used (OSM, PSM, PeopleAdmin, Qualtrics)
  • Step-by-step breakdown of the screening and hiring process
  • Explanation of scoring and candidate evaluation
  • FAQ and helpful resources for new hires

The manual is organized in a way that allows someone to follow the process step by step and also go back to specific sections when needed. It is designed to be a reference tool that employees can use during their daily work.

Challenges Encountered

One of the main challenges was deciding how much information to include. There is a lot of detail in the hiring process, and it was difficult to balance being thorough without making the manual overwhelming.

Another challenge was organizing the information in a way that makes sense to someone new. Since I am already familiar with the job, I had to step back and think from the perspective of a new hire who has never seen these systems before.

I also had to make sure that all the information was accurate and aligned with current processes, which required reviewing internal resources and double-checking details.

Project Processes

To complete this project, I followed a step-by-step process.

First, I gathered information from my daily work experience, notes, and internal HR resources. I also paid attention to common questions new hires ask so I could include those in the manual.

Next, I created an outline to organize the content into clear sections. After that, I started writing each part of the manual, focusing on making the instructions simple and easy to follow.

Once most of the content was written, I began putting everything together into one document. I reviewed the structure, improved the flow, and edited the wording to make it more clear.

Finally, I completed a near-final version that is ready to be shared with my supervisor for feedback and final improvements.

Overview of the Experience

This project gave me a real understanding of how important training and onboarding materials are in Human Resources. It showed me that good documentation can make a big difference in how confident and prepared employees feel.

I also had the chance to apply what I’ve been learning in my job in a more structured way. Instead of just doing tasks, I had to think about how to explain those tasks to someone else.

Overall, this experience helped me grow in areas like organization, communication, and attention to detail.

Insights

One of the biggest things I learned is that clarity is everything. Even small changes in wording or structure can make a big difference in how someone understands a process.

I also learned that HR is not only about completing tasks, but about creating systems that support people and help them succeed.

Another takeaway is the importance of thinking from the user’s perspective. A good training manual is not just about including information, but about making that information easy to use.

This project confirmed my interest in continuing a career in Human Resources, especially in areas like onboarding, training, and process improvement.
