Authenticity in Social Media

Project Purpose

Throughout college, almost every project I worked on had the same goal: preparing for my future career. I constantly found myself asking questions like, “Will this help me professionally?” or “Can I put this on my résumé?”

For this project, I wanted to do something different.

Instead of creating content focused on building a professional image, I wanted to learn how to communicate as myself. My goal was to explore how authentic storytelling, creativity, and digital communication can help people connect with one another online. Rather than focusing on polished or perfect content, I wanted to understand what makes everyday experiences meaningful and relatable.

The project became an opportunity to learn about online communication from a different perspective while also challenging myself to become a better storyteller.

The Project

The final product was an Instagram account where I documented small moments from my daily life through short-form videos. The content included reflections, humorous moments, everyday routines, and experiences with my emotional support cat.

Although the account served as the public result of the project, most of the work happened behind the scenes. I researched successful content creators, studied storytelling techniques, planned future videos, wrote scripts, learned video editing, experimented with different formats, analyzed engagement metrics, and adjusted my content based on audience response.

Each post became an opportunity to practice communicating ideas in a way that felt genuine while also keeping viewers engaged.

Challenges

One of the biggest challenges was learning how to balance authenticity with intentional communication. It was easy to overthink every video and wonder whether people would understand the message I wanted to share.

I also had to learn completely new technical skills, including video editing, pacing, captions, transitions, and creating content that could capture attention within the first few seconds.

Project Process

The project began with researching content creators whose storytelling style felt authentic and engaging. From there, I developed a content plan and created an overall direction for the account.

Each video followed a similar process:

  • Brainstorming ideas from everyday experiences
  • Writing and revising scripts or outlines
  • Recording multiple takes
  • Learning and applying new editing techniques
  • Publishing the content
  • Reviewing audience engagement and identifying what resonated most with viewers

Experience Overview

One of the most rewarding parts of this project was watching my confidence grow. At first, recording myself felt uncomfortable, and I spent a lot of time worrying about how people would respond.

As I continued creating content, I became more comfortable sharing my personality instead of trying to create the “perfect” video.

One of my videos eventually reached nearly 2,000 views and received over 180 likes, which was a significant improvement from my earlier videos. While those numbers were exciting, the most valuable part was understanding why people connected with that content and using those insights to improve future videos.

Insights and Takeaways

This project taught me that communication on social media is much more than posting content. It requires planning, research, creativity, audience awareness, storytelling, and continuous adaptation.

More importantly, it reminded me that meaningful communication often comes from sharing genuine experiences rather than trying to appear perfect.

For the first time during my college experience, I worked on a project that wasn’t centered on building my résumé or preparing for a job interview. Instead, it challenged me to think about how I communicate as a person.

Learning to tell stories about ordinary moments helped me better understand both myself and the way people connect online. It reminded me that communication isn’t only about delivering information; it’s also about helping people feel understood, seen, and connected.
