I am pleased to present my report on the Winter 2023 Communication Department Senior Showcase. As part of the event organizers, I was responsible for planning and coordinating several aspects of the showcase, including coming up with the theme, arranging for food and decorations, finding a motivational guest speaker, helping the seniors prepare their presentations, and more.
The Senior Showcase is a highly anticipated event that takes place every semester, allowing Communication seniors to present their senior projects that demonstrate what they have learned as a student and how they have applied their knowledge in the real world. The event lasted the entire day, starting with set up in the morning, followed by the motivational guest speaker, and culminating in the main event in the afternoon. This event was designed to congratulate the seniors for their hard work and dedication over the last four years. As the event approached, I closely monitored our spending and made adjustments as needed to ensure that we stayed within our budget. Thanks to careful planning and management, we were able to successfully host the Senior Showcase while staying within our $1000 budget.
In total, we had 68 seniors present their projects at the event, which was attended by the entire Communications Faculty who also served as judges for the showcase. The event was a success, thanks to the dedication and hard work of the planning committee, the participating seniors, and the support of the communications Faculty. The showcase began with a motivational guest speaker who spoke on the importance of communication skills and how they can be applied in the real world. The guest speaker’s message was well-received, and it helped set the tone for the rest of the day. The seniors then took the stage, one by one, to present their projects, which were creative, engaging, and informative. The projects were diverse, ranging from documentary films to social media campaigns, and each showcased the presenting senior’s unique skills and talents.
The event was decorated with a winter wonderland theme, featuring snowflakes, snowmen, and blue and white decorations. The food was catered and included a variety of options, from sandwiches to salads and desserts. The atmosphere was festive, and everyone seemed to enjoy the event. Despite the overall success of the Communication Senior Showcase, there were some downsides that our team identified during the event. One area in which we could have done better was with the management of AV equipment. While we had assigned equipment to each senior, we could have been more thorough and strict with these assignments to ensure that the equipment was used properly and efficiently. As the event progressed, we noticed that some seniors were having difficulty with their equipment, causing delays and interruptions in the presentations. This was a source of frustration for both the seniors and the audience, and it detracted from the overall experience of the event. In retrospect, we could have done a better job of communicating the importance of proper AV equipment usage to the seniors beforehand and enforcing these guidelines more strictly during the event.
Day of the event
Throughout the Winter 2023 Communication Department Senior Showcase project, I gained valuable insights and takeaways. Firstly, effective planning and communication are critical to the success of an event, especially when working with a budget. It is important to stay organized, monitor spending closely, and make adjustments as necessary to stay within budget. Secondly, attention to detail is crucial, especially when it comes to equipment management. Being thorough and strict with AV equipment assignments can help prevent delays and interruptions in presentations, leading to a smoother event experience for everyone involved. Teamwork and collaboration are essential in event planning, as it allows everyone to contribute their unique skills and ideas to achieve a common goal.
The project was a great learning experience for me, and I am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the planning committee for such an important event. I am confident that the insights and takeaways I have gained will be useful in my future endeavors and look forward to applying them in my future projects.
