The purpose of this project was to enhance the online presence of L&Y Computers, a small business located in Woodbridge, VA. The key objectives included:
- Building and maintaining an engaging social media presence through the Facebook platform.
- Increasing the store’s online following and driving more in-store customer traffic.
- Developing a sustainable digital marketing strategy to ensure ongoing growth and visibility.

Work Produced
The primary goal of this project was to enhance the online presence of L&Y Computers, a small business in Woodbridge, VA. The project focused on building a strong social media presence through Facebook to connect with the local community, drive in-store traffic, and improve customer engagement. To achieve this, I designed a comprehensive content strategy and implemented it over the course of the semester.
The work produced included a variety of creative and engaging content:
- A new logo designed to give the brand a modern and professional look.
- Facebook Stories posted multiple times a week to showcase daily deals and promotions.
- Seasonal campaigns, such as a Halloween post highlighting deals on CDs and DVDs and a Thanksgiving post expressing gratitude to customers while promoting holiday discounts.
- Tech Tip posts providing practical advice, such as organizing desktop files, cleaning devices, and extending battery life.
- A QR code system implemented at the checkout counter to encourage customers to follow the store’s Facebook page for a $1 discount on purchases.
These deliverables were strategically planned and executed to create a consistent and professional online presence for L&Y Computers.

Challenges Encountered
One of the first challenges I faced was communication delays with the store owner. Initially, gathering feedback and aligning on expectations slowed down the project’s start. However, I addressed this by scheduling regular check-ins and maintaining clear communication throughout the process.
Another obstacle was building engagement on the correct Facebook page. Initially, some customers were directed to the wrong page, which diluted our efforts. To solve this, I created QR codes that linked directly to the store’s official page and incentivized customers with a discount for following.
Consistency in posting was also challenging, as it required balancing creativity with execution while ensuring posts aligned with the store’s brand and customer interests.

A key component of this project was the creation and implementation of a content calendar. This calendar served as the backbone of our social media strategy, ensuring consistent, engaging, and timely posts to connect with our audience and promote L&Y Computers’ deals.

Overview of Experiences
This project provided a valuable opportunity to apply digital marketing and social media management skills in a real-world setting. Collaborating with the store owner to align on messaging and branding gave me hands-on experience in stakeholder communication. The project also required creative problem-solving, particularly in overcoming initial engagement challenges and building a system for consistent posting.
Working on this project allowed me to experiment with different types of content, such as Stories, promotional posts, and educational tips, which broadened my understanding of what drives customer engagement. It also taught me how to adapt quickly to feedback and unexpected hurdles, such as low initial engagement or delays in gathering information.
Insights and Takeaways
- Consistency is Key: Regular posting, particularly through Facebook Stories, helped maintain audience interest and encouraged followers to stay engaged.
- Customer Incentives Work: Introducing QR codes with a small discount incentive of $1 proved highly effective in driving customer interaction and increasing followers on the correct Facebook page.
- Research Drives Strategy: Analyzing competitors’ strategies provided valuable insights into what types of content and posting schedules would be most effective for a small business. I found that story promotional posts drove engagement among viewers/customers, and competitors with large followings would sell products within hours.
- Communication is Important: Maintaining clear and consistent communication with the store owner was essential for aligning on goals, ensuring timely feedback, and producing high-quality content.
Overall, this project taught me the importance of flexibility, creativity, and collaboration in achieving marketing goals. It has given me a deeper understanding of how to use digital platforms effectively to build a brand’s online presence and connect with its audience. This experience will undoubtedly inform and enhance my future work in digital marketing and communications.
