Connecting PR and Business Strategy: My Senior Project with 4J Rentals
As a Communication major with an emphasis in Public Relations at BYU-Idaho, I have spent my academic journey mastering storytelling, branding, and maximizing audience engagement. However, my senior project took me beyond my comfort zone and into the world of business strategy, market research, brand design, and brand development. For my project, I conducted a comprehensive case study and created a brand kit for 4J Rentals, a new dumpster rental business preparing to launch in the Eastern Idaho market. This was not a easy project for me simply because my usual interests and working experience are not in the construction or dumpster rental industry. I was challenged in ways I never expected and my ability to apply communication principles to any industry was reinforced. Let me tell you all about my experience!
Understanding 4J Rentals and Its Market
4J Rentals is a dumpster rental business owned by four brothers, whose last names begin with a “J”, hence the name of the business. To kick-off my project I scheduled a meeting with the owners, the brothers, to gain understanding of their goals and vision for 4J Rentals. From there I learned that 4J Rentals is aiming to provide a more reliable and “always ready” customer-focused alternative to existing competitors. When speaking to various contractors and residents in the Eastern Idaho area, it was clear that although there are many dumpster rental businesses in the region, most were booked enough so full, they often could not get a dumpster rental when their customers first needed it. Recognizing a gap in the market, 4J Rentals wants to position itself as an affordable, convenient, fast, and community-oriented service. To help them successfully enter the market, I conducted a case study that examined their target audience, local and national competitors, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats , and overall market positioning.
Main Research Findings:
- Target Audience: Homeowners, contractors, and commercial businesses.
- SWOT Analysis: Identified the company’s strengths (availability and affordability), weaknesses (lack of brand recognition), opportunities (growing demand in Idaho Falls), and threats (competition from national and local brands like Waste Management and DumpIt).
- Competitor Analysis: Compared 4J Rentals with both local and national competitors to determine areas where they could differentiate themselves, such as pricing transparency and customer service.
- Market Research: Researched how well the dumpster rental industry is performing and in demand nationally, and in Idaho specifically.
This research was essential because a strong business strategy begins with understanding the market. Before launching, 4J Rentals needed clear insights into their customer base and competition to create a brand identity that resonates with their audience.
Building a Brand from the Ground Up
Once I established 4J Rentals’ case study and positioning, I developed a comprehensive brand kit to help them launch successfully. This included:
- Mission and Vision Statements – Crafted to reflect 4J Rentals’ commitment to providing hassle-free, fast, and community-driven waste management services.
- Brand Slogan – “Efficient. Reliable. Ready to Roll.” to convey their promise of dependable service.
- Brand Voice – Professional, approachable, and solution-oriented to build trust and a relationships with their target audience.
- Visual Identity – Created a logo, color palette, and selected typography to establish a cohesive and recognizable brand.
- Marketing Materials – Designed business cards, door hangers, and employee apparel to reinforce brand awareness in the local community.
- Website Mockup – Outlined a user-friendly website with easy booking and clear service details.
- Dump Trailer Wrap Design – Ensured the company’s branding was visible and impactful on the road.
Creating these materials was crucial because branding is more than just a logo, it’s about crafting a consistent identity that builds recognition and trust. By providing 4J Rentals with a professional and polished brand kit, I helped them establish credibility before their official launch.
Why this Project Pushed Me Outside of My Comfort Zone
Before this project, I was primarily interested in PR campaigns, media relations, and digital content creation. However, working on a business-focused project forced me to think beyond traditional communication tactics and dive into market analysis, branding strategy, and business development.
At first, the idea of working on a dumpster rental company seemed outside my expertise. But as I researched and developed the brand, I realized that strong communication principles apply to any industry. Every business needs a compelling brand story, a clear value proposition, and a strategic marketing approach.
This project not only expanded my skill set but also taught me the importance of adaptability. As a future communications professional, I now feel more confident tackling diverse projects, understanding different industries, and applying PR principles in unexpected ways.
Final Thoughts
By conducting a case study and creating a brand kit for 4J Rentals, I was able to bridge my expertise in communication with essential business strategy principles. This experience reinforced my belief that PR is not just about media coverage—it’s about shaping narratives, building brands, and driving business success.
Looking ahead, I’m excited to continue using my skills to help businesses craft meaningful brand identities, connect with their audiences, and position themselves for long-term success. This project was a challenge, but one that has ultimately made me a more well-rounded and capable professional.
