Purpose and Objectives
The primary objective was to build a culture of recognition, collaboration, and fun across departments at Centre Square Apartments by creating opportunities for staff to be seen, celebrated and engaged. The project had three main components:
- Weekly Employee Spotlight Campaign
- Friendly Department Competition
- After Hours Employee Potluck
All three of these initiatives aimed to not only boost morale but also spark pride and involvement in workplace culture.
Project in Action
The employee spotlight campaign involved identifying and scheduling which employee would get a shout out that week. This portion of the campaign involved collecting bios, photos, and collaboration with our social media team, where each week I would get them all the information needed, and they would post it on to our Instagram story every Friday.
The second portion of the employee morale initiative was the department competition. This process involved rafting clear rules and judging criteria, working closely with department heads to ensure effective rollout, and tracking engagement throughout the week. It was designed to foster teamwork, healthy rivalry, and daily motivation.
The final component was the after hours potluck for all the employees to get to know one another outside of a workplace setting. This portion involved reserving a location, scheduling a date where all employees could attend, and coordinating activities at the dinner. The event concluded with a celebration and the announcement and recognition of the competition winners from the previous week.
Challenges Faced
The whole point of this project was to bring the departments closer together since a regular day to day did not involve that sort of collaboration. Given that was one of the goals, communication efforts was a challenge, making sure all departments were aware of the different activities going on, as well as making sure they could participate without interrupting their day to day operations.
Another challenge was essentially getting the ball rolling, no one was opposed to the idea of these events but they weren’t excited as well. Building the hype and establishing a foundation a fun and unity was hard at first but once it was there, it took a life of its own and flourished.
Process
The project began with reviewing Centre Square Apartments existing communication efforts and developing a structured plan. Weekly milestones included outreach, content creation, post design, and collaboration with leadership. Regular check ins with a mentor and department heads ensured the work stayed aligned with organizational goals. All initiatives were carefully timed and layered to build anticipation and maintain interest.
Throughout the process, I maintained clear records, adjusted timelines when needed, and made data informed decisions by monitoring social media engagement and analyzing staff feedback.
Overview of Experiences
This project for me was more than just making sure all departments were having fun and worked together, it was about helping the Centre Square as a whole feel unified and appreciated. Some insights I gained from this project were:
- Collaboration is Key: This project would not have happened without cross departmental communication and effort
- Creativity Breeds Innovation: The different departments excelled with meeting departmental goals because these initiatives allowed them to let loose and become more creative.
- There is Always Room For Improvement: Centre Square has wonderful employees who do a great job working with one another, but there were some gaps that needed to be filled and these initiatives helped with that.
Final Takeaway
Employee engagement doesn’t require grand gestures it requires consistency, clarity, and creativity. Through spotlighting individual stories, designing engaging competitions, and hosting inclusive celebrations, organizations can foster a workplace where people feel proud, connected, and seen.
This project is a strong reminder: when you put people at the center of your planning, everything else falls into place
